    Unable to Use Inline Editing Even When Feature Is Enabled

     

    SCENARIO

    User is unable to use inline editing on a list or saved search, even when the Inline Editing feature is enabled.

     

    The behavior can be caused by various reasons:

    • The role of the user only has the View permission level for the permission related to the record type
    • The field is to be edited is hidden on the preferred form
    • The preferred Entry form's Enable Field Editing on Lists preference is disabled
    • The Display Type of the field to be edited is set to Inline or Disabled
    • The field to be edited uses a formula
    • The field to be edited is not applied / shown to the record type
    • The field to be edited is a Multiple Select field
      NOTE: The field type is currently not supported via Direct List Editing. The ability to use Inline Editing for Multiple Select fields is filed under Enhancement 174567. To search and vote for the Enhancement, see 10054 Voting for Enhancements.
    • The role of the user has Restrict Time and Expenses preference enabled
    • The role of the user does not have the Find Transaction permission
    • The user tries use inline editing on a transaction list or saved search that has multiple transaction types
    • The user tries use inline editing on a transaction list or saved search with results that contain line item fields
    • The user tries use inline editing on a transaction list or saved search that returns rows representing line items
    • The user has enabled Use Expressions on the search.

    SOLUTION

    Cause

    Action Item
    The role of the user only has the View permission level for the permission related to the record type
    1. Login as Administrator role
    2. Navigate to Setup > Users/Roles > Manage Roles
    3. Custom role: Click Edit
    4. Click Permissions
    5. Locate the permission related to the record type the user is trying to edit via Inline Editing
      • Level: Select Edit
    6. Click Save
    The field is to be edited is hidden on the preferred form
    1. Navigate to Customization > Forms > Entry Forms
    2. Preferred form: Click Edit
    3. Click Fields
    4. Field:
      • Show: Enter Checkmark
    5. Click Save
    The preferred form's Enable Field Editing on Lists preference is disabled
    1. Navigate to Customization > Forms > Transaction / Entry Forms
    2. Preferred form: Click Edit
    3. Enable Field Editing on Lists: Enter Checkmark
    4. Click Save
    The Display Type of the field to be edited is set to Inline or Disabled
    1. Navigate to Customization > Lists, Records, & Fields > Entity Fields
    2. Field: Click Edit
    3. Click Display
    4. Display Type: Select Normal
    5. Click Save and Apply to Forms
    6. Select the form where to show the field
    7. Click Save
    The field to be edited uses a formula
    1. Navigate to Customization > Lists, Records, & Fields > Entity Fields
    2. Field: Click Edit
    3. Click the Sourcing & Filtering / Validation & Defaulting tabs
    4. Check if there's anything selected in the Source List or Default fields
    The field to be edited is not applied to the record type
    1. Create a custom Item field:
      1. Navigate to Customization > Lists, Records, & Fields > Item Fields
      2. Label: Enter label
      3. Store Value: Enter Checkmark
      4. Type: Select Free-Form Text
      5. Click Applies To
      6. Inventory: Enter Checkmark
      7. Non-inventory: Enter Checkmark
      8. Click Save and Apply to Forms
      9. Select Show for all forms that apply
          
    2. Enter a value for the custom field via Inline Editing:
      1. Navigate to Lists > Accounting > Items
      2. Click Customize View
      3. Click Available Filters
      4. Type:
        • Show as Multi-Select: Enter Checkmark
      5. Click Save
      6. Filters:
        • Type: Select Inventory Item, Non-inventory Item and Service Item
    The role of the user has Restrict Time and Expenses preference enabled
    1. Navigate to Setup > Users/Roles > Manage Roles
    2. Custom Role: Click Edit
    3. General:
    4. Click Save
    The role of the user does not have the Find Transaction permission
    1. Navigate to Setup > Users/Roles > Manage Roles
    2. Custom role: Click Edit
    3. Click Permissions
    4. Click Transactions
    5. Permission: Select Find Transactions
      • Level: Select Edit or Full
    6. Click Save
    The user tries use inline editing on a transaction list or saved search that returns rows representing line items
    1. Navigate to Lists > Search > Saved Searches
    2. Saved Search: Click Edit
    3. Click Criteria
    4. Filter: Select Main Line
      1. Main Line: Select Yes
      2. Click Set
    5. Click Save & Run
    The user has enabled Use Expressions on the search

    If the Use Expressions option is enabled for a search, inline editing is disabled in list, dashboard, and sublist views based on that search. If you want inline editing to be available for a view, ensure that the Use Expressions box is not checked for the search that filters view results.
